Blog 7: Response to Kaprow “Blurring of art and life”

In the article, the author, as an artist that research on activities that happen in our lives, tells us this kind of new form of art. In the author’s opinion, nowadays, some people may think that what the author research on is not a kind of art. The artwork should only be put in the places like library or museum. According to the author of the article, people always ignore the art things or behaviors happen in our lives. For example, people brush their teeth every day, the author consider it as a kind of art because of watching the elbow moving makes her thinks a lot. I think the author wants to tell us: a lot of small things happen in our lives but we always ignore them; if we care more about these small details, we could feeling that we are living in a world that full of art.

I totally agree with the author, because sometimes I have the same feeling. Sometimes when I walk to school, I may ignore the scene around me; however, if I pay attention to the details, I can see a lot of beautiful thing like the blue sky and white clouds.

Let’s pay more attention to our world and feel this world that full of art!

Micro-Assignment 2, Identity/Mapping

On the first day of the class, I remember I got up early in the morning. I searched the Google map to find the exact place of Ohio Stadium. (Although I had already known where it is, and I just want to make sure I wouldn't go to wrong place.) I found the stadium is not far from my home------Riverwatch Tower at all. And this is the exact same place as I thought. So, I decided to walk to my ArtEdu 2520 classroom.

The air is fresh. This is my first feeling when I walk out of Riverwatch Tower. There was no cloud in the sky, and the sun was shining. It should be a great day, but I do not think so, because I hate the sunshine. I felt hungry because I hadn't ate my breakfast. I went to Seven-eleven and bought a hot-dog  and green tea. I walk along the West Lane Avenue until I saw the traffic light, it is about 200 meters. Then, I have to wait until the traffic light turns green to cross the road. After crossing the road, I walked straight to Ohio Stadium. I walked around 500 meters to arrive the Ohio Stadium. On the first day to the classroom, I really had no idea about what is the exact place of the classroom. So, I walked around the Ohio Stadium and tried to look for a notice. Well, I did find it. There is a paper on the glass door. And the paper shows that here is the way to ArtEdu 2520 classroom. Then, I just walked through this door and went upstairs, and finally, I found the classroom.

Blog 6: Response to “Cardiff, Miller and the Power of Sound”

This article shows us a kind of very interesting artwork------using sound to record lives. Cardiff and Miller is a couple of artists who are famous of their work of sound. The article talks about what happen to artists Cardiff and Miller when they were making their artwork. They recorded almost all their lives, their travels, their dialogues. When people come and listen their artworks, they can feel that they become the persons in the recording and they can feel everything happens. For example, in their artwork “The Murder of Crows”, people can feel a kind of the strangest and most fraught periods of lives happened to artists Cardiff and Miller. This is really an interesting and amazing experience.

After reading this article, I find this could be a really interesting experience for us to feel the art. Nowadays, almost all of us have a device to record sound like our cell phone, mp3 and so on. We can try what artists Cardiff and Miller do by recording one day of our lives! Maybe we can find some great and amazing things.

Blog 4: Response to Hornby “Nipple Jesus”

Artist Martha created an artwork named Nipple Jesus. She made a large picture of Jesus by lots of small nipple pictures. At first, no people care about this. Maybe they just think this is an artwork. No people come to argue this. However, when it was known by a lot of people, the situation became out of control. People start to protest the exhibition of this artwork. Lots of people came here to see the artwork. The police come, the vicar comes, and some people become crazy. A person even tries to throw eggs to the Nipple Jesus. Finally, we know the truth. Artist Martha actually just want to watch a show or we can say make a film, and that is just for fun!

This is really an amazing and interesting story. Maybe everyone would be shocked by the ending of the story. Just thinking about it, a Christian was throwing eggs to the Jesus picture and claim he loves Jesus! In the article, I find that when other people asked Martha why she make this picture. She’s answer is “well, it’s a free country.” Is it a kind of sarcasm?

Micro-Assignment 1

Ten pictures

1: Asymmetrical image

Great Campus building!
2: Symmetrical image

This picture was taken in Main Library.

3: Radial image

I use seven rainbow color books to make the radial effect.

4: Person and their surrounding space

It's really a beautiful fountain, isn't it?

5: Person up close

The photo of my roommate   - -...Interesting expression!!

6: An image from the point of view of an ant

These pictures are what I think the ants could see.

7: An image from the point of view of a bird

Well, birds could see much more than a person.

8: A stable image

This duck kept standing near the pond for five minutes by this posture.

9: An unstable image

I love taking these kind of pictures! These two ducks rushed to me when I was feeding others.

10: Your name on campus

I thought a lot before taking this picture. Finally I choose Main Library...

I took the first ten pictures when I was having a small trip around the campus. I hold the camera, and walked around in the campus. When I found the beautiful scenery, I just pressed the shutter. Actually, I take a lot of beautiful pictures during that trip. I remember I found many interesting things at that time. A squirrel was using a curious sight looking at me, and it was not afraid of me at all. This is really my favorite picture. I love this cute creature.

However, this time is different, because this time, the pictures I took has to follow the requests. I still took all these pictures on campus and maybe this is the only point in common. I first think about where on campus I could take these pictures. I wrote a list to decide the place. And I just go there and take the planned pictures. Well, I found an interesting when I took these pictures. Sometimes what the camera sees could be amazing than what you see. The “ant view” pictures really amazed me!

I think I feel more enjoyable when I was taking the first ten pictures, because I can feel freer to take these pictures. I do not need worry about the request. I could choose when to take the pictures, and I think this makes me feel more artistic.

Ten pictures of Columbus

Blog 3: Response to the Walker and Barrett articles

1: Article Walker Big Idea:

This article introduces to us one series of artworks named In the Garden designed by Bartlett. From these artworks, we can learn the concept of rules and systems. In Bartlett’s artworks, we can found there are several rules. These sculptures are used easy-found materials and all of them have life-size scale and the same subject matter. In my opinion, use some same rules could really make the series artworks seems better, because same rules could make people feel harmonious among these artworks. I agree the author’s point that people usually created the great artworks when the artworks match their emotion.

Use the same rules in the series of artwork does make the artworks look more harmonious. However, sometimes could also make the audience feel tired, because the audience might think these artworks has no “bright point”. In my opinion, in a series of artworks, maybe use the different rules not a bad idea. The audience may always find surprises when appreciating the next artwork.

2: Article Barrett Visual Culture

Just from the tittle of the article, we can see this article talks about how to read and what can we know from a picture. The article mainly discusses the denotations and connotations about the pictures. I can use an easy example to explain the difference between denotations and connotations. A girl sends you a box of chocolate, there is a label on the box---“chocolate”, and you will know inside the box is chocolate. This is the denotation. If the box is heart-shaped, you may think the girl loves you, and this is the connotations.

I think denotations and connotations may not always be true in our life. In contrast, they may cause misunderstanding often. Even a cement mark may change a sentence totally different meaning. Sometimes things are not the same as what we see or what we think.

Blog 2: Response to the Kidd, Hickey and Weschler articles

1: Article Kidd The Cheese Monkeys Excerpt

After reading this article, I find this is really an amazing article. The article analysis some phenomenon about “from left to right”, “from top to bottom”, “big and small”, and the relationship between you and your enemy. I really agree the point that our enemies are sometimes will become the motion that makes us better. The article talks about the big and small are relatively. You are really a big thing to an ant, however to the whole world, you are just an ant.

I think there is some problem about talking about why from left to right. I will give some examples. In ancient China, people are usually write words from right to left. Japanese nowadays are still used to writing from right to left.

2: Hickey The Heresy of Zone Defense

This article talks about the rules about the basketball games. I agree the point that the rules should be changed because of the different ages. Different ages will cause different notions. Just like the author talks in article, dripping paint was very free when the author was young. However, later, “Pollock's joyous permission had been translated into a prohibitive”. Just like the rules of playing basketball, they are always changing.

Some of basic rules I think should not be changed in my opinion. No matter how many ages past, people should always own a kindness heart and never attempt to hurt anyone. This should always be the never change rule.

3: Weschler Uncanny Valley

After reading this article, I was amazed by our faces. We can use 44 facial muscles to produce 5,000 different expressions! This is really an interesting fact, isn’t it? This article talks about the problem of making the great animation nowadays. The only problem is how to produce the better details to make the animation more realistic. I agree the better animation have more details and less saw teeth. I compare the new computer games and some old computer games, and I can easily to find newer computer games’ picture has less saw teeth and pictures are look more natural.

In the article, the author said that the better details in animation need the better computer hardware. I think the computer hardware developing speed is really fast! For example, 2 years ago, Intel i5 dual-core CPU chips were almost the best chips on computers, however, the Intel i7 four-core CPU is really becoming a popular chip!
